Bill Gates Lists Requirements As Nations Gradually Ease Lockdown Orders

The second richest man in the world, Bill Gates, has revealed what governments across the world must do for life to get back to normal.
This is coming up as countries are slowly relaxing lockdown restrictions enforced due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Gates who is now a leading voice on how to fight coronavirus and has granted numerous interviews on how to fight it since it started, has recommended four things for life to “get back to normal”
The Microsoft founder released the list ahead of his Thursday night’s CNN Town Hall interview with White House Infectious disease expert Dr Fauci .
The list reads:
  • Testing: Gates suggests various strategies to advance current testing methods including at-home test kits and consistent standards about who can get tested.
  • Contact Tracing: Gates suggests following Germany’s model. Interview everyone who tests positive and use a database to make sure someone follows up with all their contacts. However, this relies on the infected person reporting their contacts accurately and requires a lot of staff to follow up with everyone in person. Gates suggest technology may be more adept at this, such as apps that help you remember where you’ve been or using cell phones.
  • Effective Treatment: Right now, there is no treatment for Covid-19. On Wednesday, Fauci expressed optimism about an experimental drug called remdesevir, which is still in the trial phase. Other drugs like hydroxychloroquine have received a lot of attention but are still being studied. Treatments such as convalescent plasma – drawing blood from patients who have recovered from Covid-19, making sure it is free of the coronavirus and other infections, and giving the plasma and the antibodies it contains to sick people – look promising. But there is no magic drug experts can fully support yet.
  • A Vaccine: Many countries and companies around the world are working at break-neck speed to develop a vaccine faster — and there are promising signs. Gates is particularly excited about pursuing a new approach called an “RNA vaccine.”
He said: “Unlike a flu shot, which contains fragments of the influenza virus so your immune system can learn to attack them, an RNA vaccine gives your body the genetic code needed to produce viral fragments on its own,” So, once your body senses traces of the infection, it attacks it.
As of Thursday, the COVID-19 death toll in the world stands at 231,000 with The US recording over 63,000.

Nigeria’s coronavirus cases jump by single-day record of 204 cases

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday confirmed a total number of new 204 coronavirus cases in the country and also a total of seven deaths in the last 24 hours.
Nigeria economic hub Lagos and Kano states have the highest numbers. While Kano recorded 80 new cases, Lagos State recorded 45 new cases.
The spread of the virus further intensified in Gombe state as the state recorded 12 new states.
Bauchi and Sokoto states both recorded nine new cases each, Borno and Edo states recorded seven new cases each.
River and Ogun also confirmed six new cases each.
Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states confirmed four new cases each.
Kaduna, which is currently on a 30-day lockdown, confirmed three new cases while Oyo, Delta and Nasarawa states recorded two new cases each.
Ondo and Kebbi states also confirmed one case each in the last 24 hours.
“11:50pm 30th April- 1932 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria,” NCDC tweeted on Thursday night.
319 persons have been discharged while a total of 58 persons have died from the virus.
Nigeria will begin a “phased and gradual” easing of more than four weeks of lockdowns in the national capital and the largest city on May 4, President Muhammadu Buhari said in an address on Monday.
Lagos and Ogun states and the federal capital territory of Abuja entered lockdowns to tame the spread of the new coronavirus on March 30.
Buhari said the lockdowns had come at a “very heavy economic cost,” stripping many citizens of their livelihoods.
“No country can afford the full impact of a sustained lockdown while awaiting the development of vaccines,” Buhari said.
Most state governments will enforce an overnight curfew, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and also will require all those who are out during the day to wear face masks.
The federal government will also enforce a ban on non-essential movement between Nigeria’s 36 states, a measure the governors’ forum had requested.

If Getting Married And Taking A Leave To Raise My Family Makes Me A Failure, That’s Okay – Georgina Onuoha

Former Nollywood actress Georgina Onuoha has addressed those who have been slamming her for taking a break off of acting.
The actress who is now in the US with her kids shared a throwback video of herself and stated that many have over the years called her a failure for taking a break from acting.
Onuioha added that if getting married and taking a leave to raise her family makes her a failure in their eyes, she is fine with it.
When women were girls. We gave it our all.
”If you know them tag them. I can’t believe this is 17 years ago or thereabout. We gave it our all. Months in the forest, endless rehearsals, sprints and marathons, 100 meters senior girls race๐Ÿ˜‚, caves, valleys, rivers, forest and high hills. All done for the love of art. We all can look back today and be thankful for the journey and opportunities this movie afforded many of us. .

”Awards were won, nominations came in from home and abroad and all over Africa.

It took me 6 months to recover from my sprained ankle filming, yes if you remember me limping it was real for real and not acting. As they say, the show must go on.

Skin rashes and conditions that took me months to heal from.

It was worth it all. .

”So next time when I hear a no do well refer to me as a failure because I took a sabbatical, I just giggle ๐Ÿคญ and smile knowing that he or she is a child or was probably in primary school or couldn’t afford a videoclub membership of yesteryears.
.
”If getting married and taking a leave to raise a family and pursue higher education and other career paths makes me a failure in Nollywood after almost 100 movies, numerous awards, modeling career, TV commercials and brand ambassadors for so many products, please sign me up. I will consider that insult a badge of honor. I will applaud myself then as the biggest and best loser of all time ๐Ÿ˜‚. .

Joe Biden launches VP search committee for White House bid

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on Thursday, unveiled a committee to help him search for and vet a running mate in his White House race against Donald Trump.
The step comes as Biden faces mounting pressure to address allegations by a former aide that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s, and as top Democrats came to the party icon’s defense.
Biden has pledged to pick a woman for vice president, a position he himself held for eight years during Barack Obama’s presidency.
“Selecting a vice presidential candidate is one of the most important decisions in a presidential campaign and no one knows this more than Joe Biden,” his campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement.
The co-chairs are former senator Chris Dodd; congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; and Cynthia Hogan, a former counsel to Biden.
“These four co-chairs reflect the strength and diversity of our party, and will provide tremendous insight and expertise to what will be a rigorous selection and vetting process,” O’Malley Dillon said.
The committee’s formation comes amid increasing pressure for Biden to address allegations that in 1993 he assaulted a 29-year-old staff assistant who worked in his US Senate office.
Biden’s campaign has denied the claims, but he himself has not responded directly to the allegations by Tara Reade, now 56.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who this week endorsed Biden for president, addressed the issue at her Thursday press conference which focused on the coronavirus pandemic.

– Pelosi defends –
“I have complete respect for the Me Too movement” against sexual harassment, Pelosi said.

But she stressed that “there was never any record” about the assault, and “nobody ever came forward to say something about it apart from the principal involved” until 27 years later.
Biden is “a person of great values” who has fought for women’s rights throughout his political career, she said.
“I have great comfort level with the situation as I see it, with all due respect in the world for any woman who comes forward, with all the highest regard for Joe Biden.”
Several women seen as candidates to be Biden’s running mate, including Senator Kamala Harris and former Georgia state lawmaker Stacey Abrams, have expressed support for Biden regarding the allegations.
“I know Joe Biden and I think he’s telling the truth and this did not happen,” Abrams, who narrowly lost the Georgia governor’s race in 2018, told CNN Tuesday.
Biden, 77, said Wednesday he had a proud history of campaigning against sexual violence.
“As you know, I wrote and championed the Violence Against Women Act, transformed how this country gets justice and support to survivors and led the ‘It’s On Us’ campaign to fight sexual assault on campuses,” he told a virtual town hall.
The Reade allegations present a thorny problem for his campaign.
Harris and Senator Amy Klobuchar, another potential running mate, played leading roles in opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court over unproven accusations that he sexually assaulted a woman at a high school party in the 1980s.

NCDC urges Reps to suspend Quarantine Act till after COVID-19

More knocks than nods continue to greet the controversial infectious disease control bill as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, has asked the lawmakers to postpone passage of such bill till end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, scaled second reading on Tuesday and has been generating negative reactions on social media.

The bill as reported by DAILY POST is a plagiarized piece of Singapore’s infectious disease control act of 1977.

Dr. Ihekweazu during media briefing by the COVID-19 taskforce, expressed reservation on the bill and called for more consultation in drafting such a bill.

He noted that a bill should not be drafted in the middle of a crisis.

“To be honest, I saw the bill just like everyone else, circulating on social media. I take it in a good way. I think the members of the House of Reps and everybody is concerned about the situation and what we have found ourselves in. They are doing their very best to come up with the only solution they can come up with which is creating new laws.

“I take it positively but the bill requires more consultations. I’m personally not in favour of drafting a bill in the middle of a crisis. I think we need to get over the crisis and use the momentum to engage with all stakeholders to come up with a bill that will really serve this country.

“We must think through step carefully and come up with a bill fit for purpose and serves us now and into the future,” he said.
