If Getting Married And Taking A Leave To Raise My Family Makes Me A Failure, That’s Okay – Georgina Onuoha

Former Nollywood actress Georgina Onuoha has addressed those who have been slamming her for taking a break off of acting.
The actress who is now in the US with her kids shared a throwback video of herself and stated that many have over the years called her a failure for taking a break from acting.
Onuioha added that if getting married and taking a leave to raise her family makes her a failure in their eyes, she is fine with it.
When women were girls. We gave it our all.
”If you know them tag them. I can’t believe this is 17 years ago or thereabout. We gave it our all. Months in the forest, endless rehearsals, sprints and marathons, 100 meters senior girls race😂, caves, valleys, rivers, forest and high hills. All done for the love of art. We all can look back today and be thankful for the journey and opportunities this movie afforded many of us. .

”Awards were won, nominations came in from home and abroad and all over Africa.

It took me 6 months to recover from my sprained ankle filming, yes if you remember me limping it was real for real and not acting. As they say, the show must go on.

Skin rashes and conditions that took me months to heal from.

It was worth it all. .

”So next time when I hear a no do well refer to me as a failure because I took a sabbatical, I just giggle 🤭 and smile knowing that he or she is a child or was probably in primary school or couldn’t afford a videoclub membership of yesteryears.
.
”If getting married and taking a leave to raise a family and pursue higher education and other career paths makes me a failure in Nollywood after almost 100 movies, numerous awards, modeling career, TV commercials and brand ambassadors for so many products, please sign me up. I will consider that insult a badge of honor. I will applaud myself then as the biggest and best loser of all time 😂. .

Joe Biden launches VP search committee for White House bid

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on Thursday, unveiled a committee to help him search for and vet a running mate in his White House race against Donald Trump.
The step comes as Biden faces mounting pressure to address allegations by a former aide that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s, and as top Democrats came to the party icon’s defense.
Biden has pledged to pick a woman for vice president, a position he himself held for eight years during Barack Obama’s presidency.
“Selecting a vice presidential candidate is one of the most important decisions in a presidential campaign and no one knows this more than Joe Biden,” his campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement.
The co-chairs are former senator Chris Dodd; congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; and Cynthia Hogan, a former counsel to Biden.
“These four co-chairs reflect the strength and diversity of our party, and will provide tremendous insight and expertise to what will be a rigorous selection and vetting process,” O’Malley Dillon said.
The committee’s formation comes amid increasing pressure for Biden to address allegations that in 1993 he assaulted a 29-year-old staff assistant who worked in his US Senate office.
Biden’s campaign has denied the claims, but he himself has not responded directly to the allegations by Tara Reade, now 56.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who this week endorsed Biden for president, addressed the issue at her Thursday press conference which focused on the coronavirus pandemic.

– Pelosi defends –
“I have complete respect for the Me Too movement” against sexual harassment, Pelosi said.

But she stressed that “there was never any record” about the assault, and “nobody ever came forward to say something about it apart from the principal involved” until 27 years later.
Biden is “a person of great values” who has fought for women’s rights throughout his political career, she said.
“I have great comfort level with the situation as I see it, with all due respect in the world for any woman who comes forward, with all the highest regard for Joe Biden.”
Several women seen as candidates to be Biden’s running mate, including Senator Kamala Harris and former Georgia state lawmaker Stacey Abrams, have expressed support for Biden regarding the allegations.
“I know Joe Biden and I think he’s telling the truth and this did not happen,” Abrams, who narrowly lost the Georgia governor’s race in 2018, told CNN Tuesday.
Biden, 77, said Wednesday he had a proud history of campaigning against sexual violence.
“As you know, I wrote and championed the Violence Against Women Act, transformed how this country gets justice and support to survivors and led the ‘It’s On Us’ campaign to fight sexual assault on campuses,” he told a virtual town hall.
The Reade allegations present a thorny problem for his campaign.
Harris and Senator Amy Klobuchar, another potential running mate, played leading roles in opposing the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court over unproven accusations that he sexually assaulted a woman at a high school party in the 1980s.

NCDC urges Reps to suspend Quarantine Act till after COVID-19

More knocks than nods continue to greet the controversial infectious disease control bill as the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, has asked the lawmakers to postpone passage of such bill till end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, scaled second reading on Tuesday and has been generating negative reactions on social media.

The bill as reported by DAILY POST is a plagiarized piece of Singapore’s infectious disease control act of 1977.

Dr. Ihekweazu during media briefing by the COVID-19 taskforce, expressed reservation on the bill and called for more consultation in drafting such a bill.

He noted that a bill should not be drafted in the middle of a crisis.

“To be honest, I saw the bill just like everyone else, circulating on social media. I take it in a good way. I think the members of the House of Reps and everybody is concerned about the situation and what we have found ourselves in. They are doing their very best to come up with the only solution they can come up with which is creating new laws.

“I take it positively but the bill requires more consultations. I’m personally not in favour of drafting a bill in the middle of a crisis. I think we need to get over the crisis and use the momentum to engage with all stakeholders to come up with a bill that will really serve this country.

“We must think through step carefully and come up with a bill fit for purpose and serves us now and into the future,” he said.

A map showing Kaduna, a state in Nigeria’s North-Central region.

Two young men have been convicted in Kaduna State for using the internet to scam both Nigerians and foreigners of their earnings.

The men, identified as Idahosa Bobby and Aidamebor Israel were on Wednesday sentenced to two years in prison each by a Kaduna State High Court after their arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to a statement by the anti-graft commission on Thursday, April 30, the two fraudsters were each arraigned on separate one-count charge bordering on online fraud and for possession of fraudulent documents.

Idahosa and Israel were said to have been arrested by a team of operatives attached to the Intelligence and Special Operations Section (ISOS) following intelligence reports indicating their involvement in cybercrime.

According to the statement, the charge against Bobby reads: “That you, Idahosa Bobby, sometime between January to March 2020, in Kaduna, within the Kaduna Judicial Division of this court, did attempt to cheat by impersonating one Waseelah6 using her Instagram account and in such assumed character, sent scam emails to unsuspecting citizens and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 57 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017 and punishable under section 309 of the same law.”

The charge against Israel reads: “That you, Israel Aidamebor, sometime in 2019 at Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this court of Kaduna State, did fraudulently induce one Mr Eyup, a Turkish national to disclose his full personal and security information which he would not have done but for your deceit by impersonating one William Illumie, an Illuminati agent via WhatsApp, a social media account and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law No.5 of 2017.”

The two pleaded guilty in the court and upon their plea, counsel for the EFCC, E.K. Garba and M. Lawal, reviewed the fact of the cases.

Having found them guilty, Justice Tukur sentenced Bobby to two years in prison with an option of N100,000 fine and Israel to two years in prison with an option of N200,000 fine.

Libya's unity government says rejects Haftar's truce offer

This image grab taken from a video published by the War Information Division of military strongman Khalifa Haftar’s self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) on April 28, 2020 shows Haftar giving a speech, saying he had “a popular mandate” to govern the country, declaring a key 2015 political deal over and vowing to press his assault to seize Tripoli. – In a speech on his Libya al-Hadath TV channel, Haftar said his self-styled Libyan “army” was “proud to be mandated with the historic task” of leading Libya. He did not make clear whether an elected parliament in the country’s east, a signatory to the deal, backed his move — or what its future role would be. Haftar has so far drawn his legitimacy from the administration based in the country’s east, and last April his forces launched an assault to seize the capital Tripoli, in the west, from the Government of National Accord. (Photo by – / LNA War Information Division / AFP) /

Libya’s UN-recognised government Thursday rejected a truce unilaterally called the day before by military strongman Khalifa Haftar, saying it “did not trust” the announcement made by its eastern-based rival.

The Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) said in a statement that it will continue in its “legitimate defence”, attacking “any threat where it exists and putting an end to outlaw groups”.

It was referring to forces loyal to Haftar, who launched an offensive on the capital in April last year.

Haftar said Wednesday his forces would cease hostilities for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on April 24, following international calls for a truce in the war-torn country.

“The commander-general announces the halting of military operations from his side,” said Ahmad al-Mesmari, a spokesman for Haftar — who controls the east and swathes of southern Libya — from the city of Benghazi.

However, the fighting did not stop in Tripoli after Mesmari’s announcement, with explosions still heard from the centre of the capital, according to an AFP correspondent.

Since fighting began in April 2019, several ceasefires between Haftar’s forces and the GNA have fallen through, with both sides accusing the other of violations.

“These violations make it so we do not trust truce announcements (from Haftar),” the GNA said in its statement.

Any “ceasefire needs to have international safeguards and mechanisms” to monitor its implementation and to document violations, the GNA added.

Last week, the UN, EU and several countries called for both sides to lay down their arms during the holy month.

Haftar’s announcement came after his forces suffered a series of setbacks in recent weeks, with GNA forces ousting them from two key coastal cities west of Tripoli.

The North African nation has been gripped by chaos since the 2011 ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi, with rival administrations in the east and west vying for power.

Horror As Five Family Members Die Mysteriously In Enugu

Dead man

File photo

There is serious panic in Enugu following the tragic death of five family members in mysterious circumstance at their family house at Amaokpo, Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

TheNation gathered that the family of Onyekwere Chukwumalu of Eziowelle, Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra, it was gathered, went to sleep on Monday night but was discovered dead on Wednesday morning with their body peeling off, an indication that they might have died of a chemical or generator fume.

It was also gathered that nobody knew of their death until somebody who worked with late Mr. Chukwumalu, a building contractor, went to look for him on appointment but found the house locked but his vehicle was parked outside.

He was forced to move closer to discover that the family was lying down dead in one heap as the late Chukwumalu was said to have held his family together as if they were praying.

It was further gathered that the incident attracted the neighbourhood, who contributed money to break into the house to bring out the corpses.

It was equally gathered that the police at Abakpa Nike, the Chairman of Enugu East, Hon. Alex Ugwu and the UN rescue mission went to the place to see things for themselves Wednesday evening.

It was also gathered that in the process of bringing out the corpses that one of the man’s children, Arinze, 10, shouted Jesus and was later rushed to UNTH, Ituku-Ozala, where he is said to be responding to treatment.

Speaking to newsmen Thursday at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu where the corpses of the deceased were kept, the South East Zonal Commander of the United Nations Rescue team, Emmanuel Okoye said that somebody informed them about the incident that a man and his family was killed and they went to the scene.

Okoye told newsmen that they helped to take the corpses to the mortuary since the police was nowhere to be found at the time the rescue team went to the scene.

Contacted, the Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Hon. Alex Ugwu said that late Chukwumalu was a good person and wondered how he would die in that manner.

He attributed his death to a possible food poisoning since there was no generator to suggest that it could be as a result of fumes from exhaust.

“When I heard about the incident, I alerted the police and the Ministry of Health to take charge. It was when the officials if the Ministry of Health were trying to evacuate the corpse that one of the man’s children sneezed and was discovered to be alive and was rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Efforts to get the police comment on the incident yielded little dividend as the police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe Ekea, said that he was not aware of the incident but that he would “get back to me.”

Woman Slumps, Dies While Urinating In Ekiti

woman identified as Victoria Yemisi Omoare has slumped and died after alighting from a car to urinate at a place close to the abattoir, along the Ekiti State University Road in Ado Ekiti.

The driver of the vehicle, Orimaye Oluwafemi said to be a lecturer in the Faculty of Agricultural Science, Ekiti State University said he was going to EKSU with the woman when the incident occurred.

According to the Ekiti State University lecture, having waited for Omoare to return for about five minutes, he with the student in his car went to check on the woman only to discover that she had slumped and died.

French Ligue 1 And 2 Season Cancelled

The French Ligue 1 and 2 2019/20 season has been cancelled after Edouard Philippe on Tuesday said football matches will not be played in the country until September.

“The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September. The 2019-20 football season cannot return,” Philippe said as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The French Professional Football League (LFP) had last week revealed plans for the resumption of the leagues on June 17 with UEFA giving August 2 as the date for the completion of domestic leagues in Europe.

In a statement, the LFP, however, said in accordance with the pronouncements made by the Prime Minister, the 2019-20 Ligue 1 and 2 season has ended.

“The LFP Board of Directors, which met on Tuesday 28 April, has taken note of the declarations by French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe,” the statement read.

“As the case has been since the beginning of this health crisis, the LFP will adhere strictly to the decisions of the government and medical authorities.

“The Board of Directors will meet on 30 April to analyse the sporting and economic consequences of the measures announced by the Prime Minister.

“Following this meeting the Board of Directors will have to formally decide to end the 2019-20 season and call a General Assembly of the LFP.”

A former international team-mate of Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil and Mats Hummels has admitted he used to play in the Bundesliga while under the residual effects of drugs.

Chinedu Ede was a member of Germany’s victorious 2009 Under-21 European Championship squad, and played in the German top flight for Mainz and Hertha Berlin among other clubs.

Now 33, he retired from the game last year and is now pursuing a career in music.

A recently released music video called ‘Reflection ’ includes the lines ‘I hated football’, and ‘In front of 60,000 in the Bundesliga, sometimes wasted’.

Speaking with T-Online , Edu explained that his hate was directed towards the football industry, which he sees as sapping the individuality from the people in it.

"I started because it was fun,” he said.

"In this industry, and football really is an industry, they simply want adaptable robots, who keep telling the same sh*t over and over again. Everything around it, with all these officials – it disgusted me.

"99 per cent of the players who spoke openly and honestly were replaced very quickly. Everything made me feel so disgusted.

“It had nothing to do with the original sport anymore. Anybody with rough edges was chiselled down until they fit into this world.

“Sure, you got a lot of money for it, but in the end no money in the world justifies not being able to be yourself."

Asked to explain whether the aforementioned line really was about drugs, Ede confirmed: "It’s basically the way it’s understood.

"Sometimes you lose touch with reality so much and want to make it right, so it was like medicine. Then you play and you still have a residual effect from the drugs.

“But on the other hand, I also mean the fact that I was playing on painkillers all the time.

“When you had an injury, you were encouraged to start [training] again earlier than was really good for your body.”

Starting at Hertha, Berlin-born Edu also represented Duisberg, Union Berlin, Mainz and Kaiserslautern before heading overseas.

He went on to play for Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta, FC Twente and Bangkok United, before returning to Berlin with minnows VSG Altglienicke.

Edu represented Germany at every youth level from U-17 to U-21, but never made the step up to the senior side.

Sergio Aguero: Manchester City striker says most players fearful of returning

"The majority of players are scared because they have family, they have children, they have babies, parents," says Aguero

Sergio Aguero says "the majority of players are scared" by the prospect of returning to football too soon amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Premier League clubs remain determined to finish the 2019/20 campaign and are due to receive 'Project Restart' proposals at a meeting on Friday about how the season could resume as early as June 8.

The government is due to review lockdown restrictions next Thursday and footballers could start training again in small groups soon after.

Agüero, 31, has been spending lockdown in his Cheshire home, but could return to training in the next couple of weeks.

"The majority of players are scared because they have family, they have children, they have babies, parents," Aguero told Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito.

Advertisement does scare me but I have just been here with my girlfriend, I haven't had contact with other people and they say that to contract the disease is very rare and difficult but they say that there are people who have it, and they don't have symptoms and they can infect you.

"That's why I've stayed at home. You can be infected and you don't know anything about it."

Manchester City's training complex at the Etihad remains closed with players fulfilling individual programmes.

Pep Guardiola and at least eight first-team players of the Premier League champions could face 14 days of mandatory self-isolation when they return to Britain for the resumption of matches.

Foreign players and managers returning to England are likely to be asked to self-isolate as part of steps to curb the spread of the virus.

Fernandinho, Gabriel Jesus, Ederson, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and David Silva are among those to have left the country during the lockdown.

Boko Haram: Again, Buhari issues order to Nigerian military

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Nigerian military to sustain operations against Boko Haram around Lake Chad and North East.

His spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a statement on Thursday, said the president gave the directive after receiving Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni at the State House, Abuja.

Buhari hailed the giant strides being recorded by the Armed Forces and urged them not to relent in the discharge of their mandate.

He warned against complacency in the task of ensuring that the nation’s territory is no longer habitable for the terrorists.

The Nigerian leader expressed the belief that “health and well-being of the nation depends largely on its ability to feed itself and agricultural production is key.”

Buhari charged tasked the Yobe governor to continuously mobilise community support for the military operations.

Buni thanked the federal government for the decisive and proactive measures in the renewed onslaught against Boko Haram.

Russian Prime Minister Reveals He Has COVID-19

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Thursday said he tested positive for coronavirus and will self-isolate to protect other cabinet members.

“I have just learned that the test on the coronavirus I took was positive,” Mishustin said in a video meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

“I have to observe self-isolation and follow orders of doctors. This is necessary to protect my colleagues,” he said, promising to be in constant contact “on all the main issues.”

He suggested that First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov takes his place as an “acting” prime minister.

“What is happening to you now can happen to anyone,” Putin reassured him in the televised meeting.

“I hope that you stay able to work and will actively participate” in government decision-making, he said.

“Without your opinions and your participation these decisions will not be made,” Putin told Mishustin, wishing him a quick recovery.

UK ‘past peak’ of coronavirus outbreak - Boris Johnson

UK 'past peak' of coronavirus outbreak -Boris Johnson

Britain is “past the peak” of its coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on  Thursday, despite recording another 674 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The coronavirus death is now 26,711, the world’s third-most highest behind the United States and Italy, after changing its reporting to include community as well as hospital deaths on Wednesday.

The UK’s number of confirmed cases rose by 6,032 to 171,253 on Thursday.

But Johnson, making his first appearance at a daily government briefing since his own battle with COVID-19, said there were reasons for optimism.

“For the first time, we are past the peak of this disease… and we are on the downward slope,” he told reporters.

“We are coming through the peak or rather we are coming over what could have been a vast peak, as though we have been going through some huge Alpine tunnel.

“And we can now see the sunlight and the pastures ahead of us. So it’s vital that we don’t now lose control and run slap into a second and even bigger mountain.”

    – Pressure to ease lockdown –

The government’s chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance said the rate of transmission was now below one, with fewer hospital admissions and people in intensive care.

That was having an effect on overall deaths, he said.

“The R (rate of transmission) is below 1.0. We think it’s between 0.6 and 0.9 across the nation. Maybe a little lower in some places, a little higher in others but it’s below 1.0 across the country,” he added, referring to the number of people infected by one person with COVID-19.

Johnson’s return to work has coincided with increased pressure to lift a lockdown that was imposed in late March to cut close contact transmission of the coronavirus.

A review is due on May 7 and he said a “roadmap” would be published next week about the government’s plan to ease restrictions, after concerns about the economic effect of the social distancing measures.

The government has also been criticised for imposing a lockdown later than most other European countries.

An opinion poll by Ipsos Mori found that 66 percent of those surveyed believed the government was too slow to introduce restrictions.

Keir Starmer, the new leader of the opposition Labour Party, told Sky News he feared the UK was on track to have one of the worst death rates in Europe.

    – Charity hero turns 100 –

“What you’re going to get next week is really a roadmap, a menu of options, the dates and times of each individual measure will be very much driven by where we are in the epidemic,” Johnson said.

“We’ve got to get your business going again,” he added.

“But it’s actually vital, if we’re to bounce back as strongly as I think we can, that we don’t have a second bout of this… because that would really do economic damage.”

Experts were looking to develop “ingenious ways” of suppressing the disease that would take into account local conditions, he said, adding that masks could form part of the solution.

“I do think that face coverings will be useful both for epidemiological reasons, but also for giving people confidence that they can go back to work,” he said.

Britain saw a sharp spike in its death toll on Wednesday after including out-of-hospital deaths for the first time, though Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty advised against drawing international comparisons until the pandemic was over.

Johnson spent three days in intensive care with the coronavirus, saying his situation could have gone “either way”.

“Let’s be frank, tragically, thousands of people have been less fortunate than I was,” he said on Thursday.

He said he had a “much happier” hospital visit on Wedneday for the birth of his baby boy with partner Carrie Symonds.

Vallance said that results of a US trial of the drug remdesivir were a “promising first step”, although warned it would not be a “magic bullet” in treating the disease.

Earlier in the day, Britain celebrated the 100th birthday of a World War II veteran whose staggering fundraising efforts have inspired the country in the depths of the outbreak.

“Captain Tom” Moore, who raised more than £30 million ($37 million) for health service charities by doing laps of his garden, was honoured with a Royal Air Force flypast and 140,000 birthday cards.

Nigeria needs comprehensive action plan – Dr. Ajileye

    lab
The Nigeria government has been advised to come up with a comprehensive action plan with proper coordination, sincerity and adequate funding to tackle the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country before it gets out of hand.

The action plan must encourage local production of standardised medical needs, improved Public-Private Partnership and increased testing.

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian medical doctor and a member of the New Generation Leadership, NGL, Dr Ajileye Omoniyi, gave this advice while speaking on the theme, “the decay, the exodus and now the pandemic” on the forum of the NGL, aimed at discussing and creating solutions to Nigeria’s health challenges at this time.

The medical expert who observed that the decay in the Nigerian health care sector had been festering for decades, said it was a reflection of the larger society where poor planning, corruption, incompetence, nepotism and an inefficient system has clogged the wheels of progress.

Dr Omoniyi said, “no progressive nation would take its healthcare system for granted, stressing that all serious nations, need a healthy citizenry to ensure that productivity is maximized and the future generations are guaranteed a solid future”.

He, however, noted that Nigeria had not always been in such a precarious ledge in terms of decay in its health care delivery system, because before independence, the nation already had formidable hospitals like the University College Hospital, Ibadan in the late ’50s with several other colleges of medicine from the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), and the University of Benin which were already established by 1975, with progressive health Ministers like the late Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, who strived to make qualitative healthcare available to every Nigerian.

Dr Omoniyi said it was disheartening to note that by the year 2020, “Nigeria is rated 187th out of 191 nations in terms of health care delivery worldwide and ranked in the bottom 5 in terms of worst infant mortality and maternal mortality”.

According to him, the World Health Organisation, WHO, the recommendation is for nations to spend at least 5% of its GDP on health care, but with of little priority in the Nigeria budget allocations, the decay has sunk to an all-time low, leading to crumbling infrastructure, outdated medical equipment and healthcare personnel exodus, with an estimated N358 billion spent on medical tourism by Nigerians last year.

These Dr Omoniyi said has led healthcare professionals to take matters in their own hands and seek socio-economic fulfilment elsewhere, creating a brain drain which is having its toll on the Nation which has not been able to match the Global benchmark which recommends a doctor to patient ratio of 1:1000.

He said, it was time for government at all tiers to address the decay in the health sector, with the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic which has further exposed the inadequacies, saying “in less than one month, the number of confirmed positive cases has jumped from 20 to over 1000 thereby highlighting the large deficit in our health delivery system”.

“Our leaders need to wake up to the realisation that coronavirus isn’t going anywhere, we cannot be doing things the same way and expect a different result. While Private hospitals are shutting their doors due to lack of adequate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), diagnostic centres are also shutting their doors to even cater to non-covid-19 emergencies”.

“While I would give high praise to the Lagos state government for their proactive stance and efforts done so far in the state, more needs to be done, If and when patients with the more severe respiratory compromise start to come, it will only be a matter of time before our fragile healthcare system is totally overwhelmed”

Dr Omoniyi thereby called on the Nigerian government to ensure proper coordination among all tiers of government while liaising with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC and the federal ministry of health to provide guidelines and a comprehensive action plan which would include Community heads, religious leaders, NGO’s and other stakeholders with adequate funding which must be made available in a quick and transparent manner with accountability and keys area targeted for maximal impact.

He enjoined the government to work on key areas like infrastructure (mobile and hospital testing), training, publicity, provision of standardized PPE and also social welfare with improved and increased Testing.

Dr Omoniyi also advised that local industries must be encouraged to produce standardized equipment and disposable PPE (facemask, scrubs, gloves, apron, goggles, etc), hand sanitizers and cleaning agents while Public and private partnership must be looked into saying “Private hospitals are normally the first port of call for most people in the country when they become unwell, so the involvement of private hospitals cannot be overemphasised”.

Bethann Hardison on Observing Ramadan in the Age of Social Distancing

Bethann Hardison on Observing Ramadan in the Age of Social Distancing

Although I grew up in an muslim household from the age of 12, I don’t consider myself to be a practicing muslim. That said, Ramadan is the one thing I do observe now. Many people think of it only as a time of fasting, but it’s much more than that. As the most sacred month on the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is supposed to be about kindness and giving back, a moment to share with others. Our own sense of conscious enlightenment comes into play as well. It’s not just about generosity towards others, it’s about being generous with oneself. In these uncertain times, that’s something we can all relate to.

Typically, muslim families come together to celebrate during Ramadan, which began on Thursday, though sadly many will be celebrating at a distance this year. It’s something that I’ve personally tended to observe in a solitary way, at least as an adult. I will likely spend the duration of the holy month here in my home in upstate New York where I’ve been since March 13. I made the journey to Saugerties with my friend Iman, who has a house close by.
