Security: Olofa wants more police personnel in Offa
Gbadamosi made the appeal while receiving the Commissioner of Police in Kwara, Mr Aminu Saleh, during his courtesy visit to the palace on Wednesday.
The commissioner was at the Olofa’s palace as part of his tour of the Area Commander in Offa.
The Olofa said the police personnel in Offa were not enough to protect the ever-increasing population in the town.
“Offa is expanding everyday with different people from all parts of the world coming to settle down for business as well as education.
“We need more officers and men of the police to maintain peace. You can’t compare Offa of ten years ago to the Offa of today. The population is growing faster.
“Post your men here, we will give them accommodation in comfortable apartments,” he appealed to the Commissioner.
Gbadamosi said the community had built 50 units of 2-bedroom flats in response to the Bank robbery incident of April 5.
He added that a Guard house, Quarter guard and Armory were under construction and expected to be completed as soon as possible.
“We hope to commence the building of Administrative block after Sallah celebration,” he said.
According to the monarch, all these facilities are for the policemen posted to Offa.
He also urged the commissioner to use his office to invite the Inspector-General of Police to commission the projects after their completion.
The commissioner assured the monarch of proper security measures for Offa and neighboring towns.
He described security as everybody’s business that should not be left for police alone, calling on the community to join hands with the Police to secure lives and property.
He also advised the youths not to allow themselves to be used as thugs during the 2019 general elections in the state.
“You should refrain from any form of crime during the elections. Make positive impact and build your future, ” he said.
Saleh urged the Olofa to set up a team that would sensitise the youths to stay away from violence. (NAN)

Offa bank robbery: Police speaks on Saraki’s ‘exoneration’

Offa robbery: Court summons IG of Police Idris
An Ilorin High Court has summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to appear before it next Wednesday to justify the continued detention of Lekan Alabi, Personal Assistant to Kwara state Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed, who was arrested over the April 5, 2018 armed robbery in Offa.
This followed protest by lead counsel to the suspect, Adelodun Ibrahim, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
He bemoaned the failure of the police to release another suspect over the same incident, Alhaji Babatunde AbdulWahab, the Chief of Staff to the governor, who has been granted bail by another high court in the state.
Adelodun, leading four other lawyers, told newsmen after Thursday’s proceeding that the refusal of the police to obey the court order on AbdulWahab was worrisome as it portends grave dangers to the deepening of democracy and might lead to a loss of confidence in the fairness of the police to handle such cases among the populace.
The police was not represented at the proceeding although Adelodun told the court they had been served all the processes relating to the case. The case was brought to Ilorin following the refusal of a Federal High court in Abuja to hear it as the alleged crime was committed in Kwara state.
Alabi has been in detention since May 28, 2018 and has not been arraigned before any court of law, a development his counsel, Adelodun, argued is in contravention of the provisions of Order 4, Rules 3 and 4 of the Fundamental Rights enforcement procedure rules (2009) as well as Sections 34, 35, 36, 37, 41 And 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In his ruling, Justice Adebayo Yusuf said there was nothing in the constitution that allows the detention of a suspect without trial for a period beyond 24 hours where there is a court or 48 hours in environment where there is no court.
“The position of the law is as stated by the leaned silk, however I’m inclined to hear from the respondent to come to court and show cause why the applicant should not be released from their custody, since they have been served the motion on notice,” the judge said, adding that it is clear that the police cannot change the constitution.
Adelodun, had while moving the application, pointed out that the detention of the applicant for 60 days without trial is a prima facie case of a breach of his rights to liberty as enshrined in section 35 (7) of the constitution and pointed out that Section 122 of the Evidence Act empowers the court to take judicial notice of the time involved in the exchange of written addresses and affidavit by parties which can compound the suffering of the applicant.
“We are not asking the court to declare our client guilty or innocent at this stage but the police has no right to keep a suspect forever”, he said citing the decision of the Appeal Court in the case of EFCC vs Akingbola, (2015 NWLR p1470,pgh249,pp290) to buttress his submission,” Adelodun said.

Again, police threatens Saraki over failure to honour its invitation, reveals its next action
The Nigeria Police Force, on Tuesday, insisted that the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki must honour its invitation.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, the Force said should Saraki refuse to honour its invitation, it “will not hesitate to use all the instruments of the law to ensure” he complies.
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris had asked Saraki to appear at the office of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja by 8 am on Tuesday, over his link to the robbery in Offa, Kwara State.
Saraki, however, failed to honour the summons.
However, the statement by the Force reads, “The Senate president must honour police invitation; otherwise the force will not hesitate to use all the instruments of the Law to ensure compliance with the law.
“The Nigeria Police Force on the 23rd of July, 2018 invited Sen. Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to report to the head of the investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team office at Guzape junction, Asokoro Extension, Abuja today, 24th of July, 2018 at 8 am for further investigation on his indictment from confessional statements from some of the five (5) gang leaders arrested for their active participation in the Offa bank robbery and gruesome murder of more than 31 persons and snatching of 21 AK47 rifles on the 5th of April, 2018 but the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria refused to honour Police invitation as at the time of this press release.
“The Force, therefore, insists that the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria is being expected to report to the head of the investigation team at the Intelligence Response Team office at Guzape junction, Asokoro Extension, Abuja and should honour the invitation, otherwise the Force will not hesitate to use all the instruments of the Law to ensure compliance with the law.”
Offa Bank Robbery: Police Invite Saraki Again
The police have invited the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, over the deadly robbery attack on six banks in Offa town of Kwara State.
The letter of invitation dated Monday, July 23, was personally signed by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.
Senator Saraki was asked to report to the Head of the Investigation Team at the Intelligence Response Team on Tuesday morning in Abuja, for further investigation on the matter.
Mr Idris referred to a letter from the police dated June 4, 2018, as well as a letter of response from the Senate President dated June 7, 2018, on the deadly attack of April 5, 2018, in Offa.
He recalled that the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) had launched an investigation into the incident which claimed 31 lives, including nine police officers and pregnant women while the suspects made away with some AK 47 rifles.
Worst Armed Robbery
The IGP said investigation revealed that a CCTV footage captured the image of two persons involved in the attack, who were later identified.
“The two persons were tracked and arrested by the police and they made very useful statements and named the five gang leaders who organised the armed robbery,” he said.
“Some of the five gang leaders made confessional statements admitting their participation in this worst armed robbery in the history of Nigeria and that they are political thugs under the name, Youth Liberation Movement aka ‘Good boys’.”
The police boss stated that the suspects also claimed the group was sponsored by the Senate President, and that he allegedly gave them “firearms, money and vehicles”.
He added that another suspect, who drives a vehicle with an alleged plate number indicting Saraki, claimed to be the head of the group which reportedly covers about seven local governments areas of Kwara South.
Mr Idris noted that the suspect, in his confessional statement, said members of his group were political thugs allegedly working for Dr Saraki and the Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed.
He said the gang leader also mentioned three other thugs in Kwara Central allegedly sponsored by the Senate President, saying, “Everyone in Kwara Central fears them because of their guns and ability to kill anybody without hesitation”.
The IGP then referred to Senator Saraki’s response to the allegations, quoting him as saying, “By virtue of my participation in politics, I have a large followership which makes it impossible for me to know all of them. I can say categorically that I am in no way associated with the vehicle mentioned in your letter nor have I given any arms to any thug or other persons in Kwara State or anywhere else. For the records, your letter under reference did not include the full text of the statements made by the accused persons.”
In view of this, Mr Idris disclosed that the police have decided to invite the Senate President for further clarification on the matter.
He said, “After a careful perusal of your letter to the police, it was discovered that the statement requires further clarification and coupled with the fact that you stated that the full text of the statements of the suspects was not shown to you, it is imperative you report to the police to make further statements after giving you the full text of the statements of the suspects.”
Senator Saraki and Governor Ahmed have denied any involvement in the attack or sponsoring any political thug.

Offa Robbery: Ilorin Youth Group Tasks Police on Diligent Investigation
The association made the plea in Ilorin in a statement jointly signed by its National President, Alhaji Babatunde Salaudeen, and National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Uthman Jagunma.
The association also expressed worry that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, was linked with the incident.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Mr Jimoh Moshood, the force spokesman, had asserted at a briefing that some suspects arrested in connection with the robbery incident had indicted Saraki.
IEYDA, however, said that while the association was for equity and justice in the police investigation, it was opposed to any attempt to ridicule and embarrass a renowned indigene of Ilorin based on politics.
“The association strongly stands against robbery and political thuggery and as such condemns same in its totality, particularly the Offa robbery which led to the death of innocent citizens.
“The association remains one of the numerous bodies which promptly condemned the robbery attack and sympathised with the people of Offa community through a press release.
“We therefore also maintain that the Ilorin Emirate Youths will not be a party to any attempt to ridicule, embarrass and disgrace any of the sons and daughters of the Ilorin Emirate,” it said.
